Lauren Boebert

Beetlejuice, Boobs and a 36-Year-Old Granny With Family Values

Lauren Boebert has spent years presenting herself as a defender of Christian values, traditional families, gun rights and moral standards. Unfortunately, her own public record sometimes looks like it was written by the producers of a particularly desperate reality television show. There’s the infamous night at the Beetlejuice musical, where security cameras caught her getting rather intimate with her date before she was escorted out. There’s the teenage son who made her a grandmother at 36, and whose subsequent legal troubles have become a recurring family headline. And there’s the small matter of a political career built on outrage, hypocrisy and an impressive ability to embarrass herself in public.

Is a prick because…

  • The Beetlejuice hand job incident: In September 2023, Boebert was thrown out of a Denver theatre during a performance of Beetlejuice. Initially, the complaints involved vaping, singing, filming and disturbing other audience members. Then the security footage emerged. It appeared to show her date fondling her breasts while she put her hand between his legs. This wasn’t some private night out. It was a family-friendly performance, with children sitting nearby. She initially denied vaping, then admitted she had. She apologised, saying she had fallen short of her values. Quite a performance, although not quite the one people had paid to see.
  • The 36-year-old granny and the teenage pregnancy: Boebert proudly announced in 2023 that she was becoming a grandmother at 36. Her 17-year-old son Tyler was expecting a child with his girlfriend. She even joked that becoming a teenage mother herself meant it was hereditary. There’s nothing wrong with being a young grandmother, and the child certainly isn’t responsible for the adults’ circumstances. But Boebert has built much of her political identity around preaching traditional family values and opposing abortion. Her family story makes for an interesting backdrop to those sermons.
  • Her son’s growing legal troubles: Tyler Boebert was arrested in 2024 after a series of vehicle break-ins and thefts involving credit cards and identity documents. He pleaded guilty to attempted identity theft and was eventually sentenced in September 2026 to 20 days in jail, with work release, and two years of supervised probation. He also pleaded guilty to child abuse and neglect after his toddler son was repeatedly found wandering outside unsupervised. Lauren appeared in court to ask the judge for mercy. That’s a mother’s right, of course, but it is hardly the picture of family stability she likes to sell.
  • The child exploitation charges facing her son: In August 2026, Tyler was arrested again, this time facing five felony charges, including three counts of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The allegations concern sexually explicit material involving a girl who was 17 at the time. Tyler was 18. He has not been convicted of these charges, and the case remains separate from his earlier guilty pleas. Lauren said she loved her son and that the allegations were being taken seriously. These are serious accusations, not proven facts, but they are another deeply uncomfortable headline for a politician who constantly lectures everyone else about morality.
  • The QAnon nonsense: During her congressional campaign, Boebert expressed enthusiasm for QAnon, the conspiracy movement built around the fantasy that a secret cabal of Satan-worshipping paedophiles controls the world. She said that if the conspiracy were real, it could be great for the country. She later attempted to distance herself from the movement. Apparently, believing a bizarre internet conspiracy is perfectly acceptable until it becomes politically inconvenient.
  • The January 6 cheerleading: On the day Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, Boebert posted “Today is 1776”, invoking the American Revolution. She had also promoted false claims about the 2020 election. Her rhetoric helped fuel the atmosphere surrounding an attack on the democratic process, yet she continued to portray herself as a defender of American freedom and democracy.
  • The Muslim terrorist jokes: Boebert repeatedly used anti-Muslim rhetoric against Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, including a story in which she portrayed Omar as a potential terrorist in a Capitol elevator. She referred to Omar and other Muslim representatives as the “Jihad Squad”. After public backlash, she issued an apology to the Muslim community, but rejected Omar’s request for a direct apology. Apparently, bigotry is only a problem when it starts costing political points.
  • The campaign mileage mystery: During her 2020 campaign, Boebert’s campaign reimbursed her more than $22,000 for driving, an amount initially equivalent to roughly 38,700 miles in seven months. The figure attracted scrutiny because it appeared to exceed the distance justified by her documented campaign appearances. Her campaign subsequently amended its filings. Questions were also raised about unpaid tax and unemployment-premium liens associated with her former restaurant, Shooters Grill. The liens were paid, and the mileage questions should not be confused with a proven criminal finding, but they hardly helped her image as a model of financial responsibility.
  • The family-values hypocrisy allegations: In September 2026, a political activist submitted a House ethics complaint alleging that Boebert had sexual relationships with three congressional staffers and arranged a payment of approximately $200,000 to one former aide. Boebert vehemently denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and false. The claims have not been independently substantiated, and the House Ethics Committee has not announced an investigation. They remain allegations, not established misconduct. Still, for someone who routinely lectures the country about traditional morality, the accusations have attracted considerable attention.

Is not a prick because…

  • She has been a devoted mother and grandmother: Boebert has spoken openly about raising her four sons and welcoming her grandson. She has also stood by Tyler through his legal difficulties. Supporting your children and grandchildren, even when they make serious mistakes, is hardly something to criticise.
  • She has genuine political support: She has won elections in a highly competitive political environment and represents voters who genuinely agree with her positions on gun rights, energy and limited government. Her supporters see her as an outspoken outsider rather than a conventional Washington politician.

Boebert has managed to combine conspiracy theories, anti-Muslim rhetoric, political theatrics and an extraordinary public theatre scandal into one congressional career. Her family has also been dragged into a succession of difficult headlines, although her son’s alleged crimes are his responsibility, not hers. For a politician who loves lecturing the rest of the country about morality, the Beetlejuice footage alone provided enough material for several lifetimes of political embarrassment. The woman who went to watch a musical about the undead somehow became the evening’s most memorable spectacle.
