Ilhan Omar has built a national profile as one of America’s most outspoken progressive politicians, but her career has been accompanied by a remarkable collection of controversies involving antisemitism accusations, questionable financial dealings, disputed tax filings, contradictory explanations and allegations about her immigration history.
Some have resulted in official findings, others remain unproven, and a few have developed into major federal investigations. From her infamous comments about 9/11 to the extraordinary allegations surrounding her marriages, Omar has repeatedly found herself at the centre of scandals that extend well beyond ordinary political disagreements.
Is a prick because…
- Her comments about 9/11 were extraordinarily insensitive. Speaking at a 2019 CAIR event, Omar described the September 11 attacks by saying that “some people did something”, while discussing the erosion of civil liberties experienced by American Muslims. The broader speech was about discrimination against Muslims, but the wording was astonishingly dismissive of an atrocity that killed nearly 3,000 people. Her defenders argued that the remark was deliberately taken out of context. Nevertheless, choosing those words when discussing the worst terrorist attack in American history demonstrated a remarkable lack of judgement.
- Her repeated controversies over antisemitism. Omar has faced criticism for comments suggesting that American politicians’ support for Israel was motivated by money and political donations. Her 2019 tweet, “It’s all about the Benjamins baby”, followed by comments about AIPAC, prompted accusations that she was invoking antisemitic stereotypes about Jewish financial influence. She subsequently apologised. She also faced criticism for suggesting that supporters of Israel were pushing politicians to demonstrate allegiance to a foreign country. In 2021, she caused another political storm by grouping the United States and Israel alongside Hamas and the Taliban in comments about accountability for alleged human rights violations. She later clarified that she was not suggesting moral equivalence. Omar says her criticism concerns Israeli government policy, not Jewish people. Nevertheless, the recurring controversies have repeatedly damaged her relationships with colleagues in Congress.
- The extraordinary allegation that she married her own brother. For years, Omar has faced allegations that her 2009 legal marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was actually a sham arrangement involving her brother, allegedly to facilitate his immigration status. Omar has vehemently denied the allegation, calling it a disgusting lie. Investigative reporting by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and PolitiFact examined the available evidence but could neither establish nor disprove the claimed sibling relationship. Questions were raised about overlapping addresses, social media posts and her complicated marital history. There is no established proof that Elmi was her brother, and the allegation should not be presented as fact. Nevertheless, the unanswered questions surrounding the marriages have remained a persistent controversy.
- The tax filings and campaign finance violations were not just political gossip. Omar and Ahmed Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015, despite not being legally married at the time. Omar was legally married to Elmi during that period. Her campaign subsequently said the tax filings were compliant, but the circumstances attracted considerable scrutiny. Separately, Minnesota’s Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board found that her state campaign had improperly used funds and failed to report certain expenses correctly. In 2019, she was ordered to reimburse her campaign $3,469.23 and pay a $500 civil penalty. The board also required amended reporting. This was an actual regulatory finding, not simply a Republican talking point.
- Her husband’s business dealings raised some extraordinary financial questions. In 2025, Omar’s financial disclosure initially listed assets connected to her husband, Tim Mynett, as being worth between $6 million and $30 million. Previous disclosures had shown dramatically lower valuations. The figures attracted attention from Republican investigators, particularly because Mynett’s companies included a venture capital business with limited publicly available information. In February 2026, House Oversight Chairman James Comer requested financial records from the companies. Omar subsequently amended the disclosure, reducing the reported joint assets to between $18,004 and $95,000, and attributed the original figures to an accounting error. Importantly, in September 2026, the Office of Congressional Conduct recommended dismissing the allegations against her, finding no substantial reason to believe she had filed false or incomplete information. The financial discrepancy was real, but the watchdog did not find misconduct.
- The campaign payments to her husband’s consulting firm also attracted scrutiny. Her campaign paid substantial sums to E Street Group, a political consulting company associated with Mynett. Critics questioned whether campaign money had been used to fund his business and whether travel expenses were legitimate campaign costs. The Federal Election Commission investigated and ultimately found no reason to believe that campaign funds had been converted to personal use. It did, however, direct the campaign to correct aspects of its expense reporting. The controversy was particularly uncomfortable given the personal relationship between the congresswoman and the company’s partner.
- The federal immigration investigation has now escalated dramatically. In October 2026, federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home as part of an investigation into whether she or her late father had provided false information on immigration paperwork decades ago. Investigators are examining questions surrounding her birth date, her father’s military history in Somalia and the circumstances under which she obtained American citizenship in 2000. Her home was searched, property was seized and relatives reportedly received grand jury subpoenas. The potential allegations include immigration fraud, conspiracy and false statements. Omar denies wrongdoing and describes the investigation as political intimidation. There is an important complication: a previous review of similar allegations in 2019 reportedly found insufficient evidence to justify a full investigation. No criminal conviction or finding of immigration fraud has been established. Nevertheless, the current federal investigation is a serious development, not simply another social media rumour.
Is not a prick because…
- She has challenged discrimination against minorities. Omar has spoken forcefully against Islamophobia and racial discrimination, including hostility directed at Muslim Americans after 9/11. She has also advocated for refugee rights and humanitarian causes. Her supporters argue that her willingness to challenge powerful political interests is precisely why she attracts such intense opposition.
- Some of the allegations against her have never been substantiated. The brother-marriage allegation remains unproven, the campaign payments to her husband’s company were not found to constitute personal misuse by the FEC, and the recent financial disclosure investigation resulted in a recommendation to dismiss the allegations. Political criticism should not turn unresolved claims into established facts.
Omar is an influential congresswoman whose career has repeatedly generated controversy, from inflammatory remarks about 9/11 and antisemitism accusations to actual campaign finance violations and a complicated history of personal tax filings. The newest immigration investigation adds another extraordinary chapter, although its allegations remain unproven and a previous review found insufficient evidence. Her record deserves scrutiny, particularly where official findings and documented statements are concerned. But the most sensational accusations should not be mistaken for proven wrongdoing simply because they make for a more dramatic headline.
