Charlie Sheen

Hollywood's Cocaine-Fuelled Playboy With a Troubling History of Domestic Violence and HIV Disclosure Allegations

Charlie Sheen is living proof that you can be born into Hollywood royalty, become one of the highest-paid actors on television and still behave like an absolute fucking lunatic. The son of respected actor Martin Sheen, Charlie had talent, money, fame, good looks and opportunities most aspiring actors would sell their souls for. He repaid that good fortune by spending years burning through careers, relationships, hotel rooms and apparently several small fortunes on drugs, prostitutes and spectacularly bad decisions. At his peak, he was earning millions per episode, yet seemed determined to see just how much of his life he could destroy before breakfast.

His spectacular public meltdown in 2011, complete with tiger blood, winning and self-proclaimed warlock nonsense, turned him into a worldwide punchline. But the bizarre interviews were only the public entertainment version of a much messier story involving domestic violence convictions, drug addiction, legal disputes, allegations of sexual misconduct and a career that repeatedly imploded under the weight of his own behaviour. Sheen has since achieved sobriety and spoken openly about his past, but his history provides enough material for several lifetimes of celebrity scandal.

Is a prick because…

  • He pleaded no contest after attacking a girlfriend: In 1996, Sheen was arrested following an alleged assault on former girlfriend Brittany Ashland. He pleaded no contest to a battery charge and received two years’ probation.
  • He pleaded guilty to assaulting his wife: On Christmas Day 2009, Sheen was arrested in Aspen, Colorado, following a domestic violence incident involving his then-wife Brooke Mueller. Mueller told police he had threatened her with a knife. Sheen subsequently pleaded guilty to misdemeanor third-degree assault in exchange for prosecutors dropping two more serious charges. He received 30 days in rehabilitation, probation and anger management.
  • He turned a hotel room into a cocaine-fuelled disaster zone: In October 2010, Sheen was ejected from New York’s Plaza Hotel after reportedly causing thousands of dollars in damage while intoxicated and using cocaine. Adult film actress Capri Anderson was found locked in the bathroom and subsequently accused him of assault and harassment. Sheen’s representatives disputed her account.
  • He spent $50,000 on prostitutes and testified against their madam: In the 1990s, Sheen became a client of Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, later admitting under oath that he had spent more than $50,000 on sexual services. He provided testimony against Fleiss after receiving immunity, helping prosecutors secure her conviction.
  • He behaved like a complete lunatic while earning millions on television: By 2010, Sheen was reportedly earning $1.8 million per episode of Two and a Half Men. His escalating drug problems, erratic behaviour and public attacks on creator Chuck Lorre brought production to a halt. In 2011, he called Lorre a variety of insults, including the antisemitic reference “Chaim Levine”, before Warner Bros. terminated his contract.
  • He gave the world the Tiger Blood meltdown: Following his firing, Sheen embarked on an extraordinary media rampage, describing himself as a warlock, claiming to possess tiger blood and declaring himself to be “winning”. He attacked his former employers, gave increasingly bizarre interviews and launched a disastrous live tour called My Violent Torpedo of Truth. The performances attracted widespread ridicule, with audiences walking out and critics savaging the show.
  • He faced allegations of raping a 13-year-old actor: In 2017, allegations emerged that Sheen had sexually assaulted Corey Haim on the set of Lucas in 1986, when Sheen was 19 and Haim was 13. Corey Feldman repeated the allegation in his 2020 documentary. Sheen has vehemently denied it, calling it fabricated, and Haim’s mother also rejected the accusation. No finding of guilt was made.
  • He kept his HIV diagnosis secret for years: Sheen publicly revealed in November 2015 that he had been diagnosed with HIV approximately four years earlier. He said he had paid millions of dollars to people threatening to expose his diagnosis. His former fiancée, Scottine Ross, subsequently alleged that he had concealed his status and exposed her to potential infection. Sheen denied knowingly putting partners at risk and said he had disclosed his diagnosis to sexual partners. The allegations generated significant legal disputes.
  • His private life became an endless cycle of drugs, affairs and broken relationships: Sheen’s three marriages ended in divorce, and his relationships repeatedly featured allegations of infidelity, substance abuse and explosive arguments. His 2025 memoir, The Book of Sheen, detailed decades of cocaine, crack, heroin and prescription drug use, alongside repeated rehabilitation attempts and seven family interventions.

Is not a prick because…

  • He has genuine acting talent: Before becoming a walking tabloid disaster, Sheen delivered excellent performances in Platoon, Wall Street, Major League and Being John Malkovich. His portrayal of Charlie Harper in Two and a Half Men also made him one of television’s biggest stars.
  • He’s been open about his addiction and HIV diagnosis: Sheen publicly disclosed his HIV status in 2015, helping bring attention to testing, treatment and the stigma surrounding the condition. He has also spoken candidly about his addiction and the damage it caused.
  • He eventually got his life under control: After decades of substance abuse, Sheen achieved lasting sobriety in December 2017. His 2025 memoir and Netflix documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, offered further insight into his addiction, relationships and recovery.

Charlie Sheen is an extraordinary waste of potential. He had the acting ability, the looks, the money and the opportunities to enjoy one of Hollywood’s most successful careers. Instead, he spent years behaving like an overgrown teenager with an unlimited credit card and absolutely no adult supervision. His domestic violence conviction, drug-fuelled disasters, professional implosions and spectacular public breakdown made him one of the entertainment industry’s most notorious trainwrecks. His recovery deserves recognition, but it doesn’t rewrite the past. For a man who once declared himself to be winning, Sheen spent an awful lot of time losing.
